I realized as I’ve worked on the interactive history map, “Newburyport – Keeping the Story Alive,” that one of the stories that is told over and over again is Newburyport’s repeated history of success, adversity, resilience and renewal. In the context of the present-day global pandemic, it is encouraging to look back and see what an incredibly resilient city Newburyport has been, to see how the city has dealt with adversity over the centuries.
This website is an extension of the interactive history map, it tells some of Newburyport’s historic stories that are on the map, also using photographs, paintings, videos, old maps, history, and anecdotes. There is an online jigsaw puzzle about each story on every page. I hope that you will enjoy these stories, some with happy endings and some not, and go on to explore the interactive history map which you will find at the end of every page. And each of these stories is a piece of the bigger story of the City of Newburyport, and when they are woven together they give a larger picture of who we are, where we have been and a roadmap of how to go forward.
